Slow economy takes toll on outdoor recreation

Richard N. Velotta writes on the In Business Las Vegas Web site that the weak economy continues to slam boat and recreational vehicle dealerships.

“I hate to be gloom and doom because I’m usually a pretty optimistic person,” said Cal Nelson, owner of Cal’s Blue Water Marine, a boat and recreational vehicle dealer in Las Vegas, Nev.

But the simple truth is that the sales of all kinds of recreational vehicles – boats, RVs, personal watercraft and all-terrain vehicles – have cratered because of the sluggish economy.

“Last year, things had really started to slow down quite a bit,” Nelson said. “I was hoping this year, things would turn around.”

Instead, they turned worse.
