Petrified Forest National Park amazing spring, autumn RV Short Stop in desert southwest

Spring and autumn are the times to visit the Petrified Forest National Park–especially for RVers who are moseying along on their way through the southwest desert and love taking stunning photographs.

Here are a few opportunities:

Sat., Sept. 17, 2016: Pedal the Petrified Forest.” Bicycle either a 63-mile round trip or a 31-mile one way trip through the park to benefit nearby Northland Pioneer College. Limited to 250 riders, signup and $86 fee required beforehand.

Sat., Sept. 24, 2016: Celebrate National Public Lands Day with hands-on activities. Free entry to the park.

Oct. 16, 2016: National Fossil Day. Special activities in the park to highlight the amazing fossil record found in the park.

Nov. 11, 2016: Free entry day on Veterans Day.

Other activities  include Ranger Guided Tours and an active Artist-in-Resident program.

As for camping, check out the Homolovi Ruins State Park near Winslow, Ariz., about 60 miles west of the Petrified Forest National Park.
