Make time to stop by tiny Boron, Calif., (off CA 58) to dine at Domingo’s Mexican Restaurant

Share

Boron_DomingoMexRest_JulianneGCraneWe heard about Domingo’s Mexican Restaurant from an RV friend and author, Terry Hager, who raved about the food.

Terry said he and his wife, Ruth, never fail to stop at Domingo’s on their travels along California Highway 58 between their snowbird destination in Desert Hot Springs and they home park near Coarsegold, Calif.

We pulled over for a late lunch on Monday, just in time for the second quarter of the Rose Bowl Game that was playing on the large screen in the lounge. Being from the Pacific Northwest, we had to root for Oregon (Go Ducks) over Wisconsin. What a game … and what great food, atmosphere and friendly service … all for a reasonable price. My Enchiladas Suizas were $9.75 and Jimmy’s Carne Asada was $10.95 (both served with rice, beans, soup or salad).

DomingoMexRest_JimmySmith_JulianneGCraneOpen for more than 20 years in this small town of Boron (with the largest borax mine in the world nearby), the restaurant sits on Twenty Mule Team Road.

Edwards Air Force Base is just a few miles away, and it is my understanding that astronauts frequently stopped by this oasis whenever they landed at Edwards, so there are many signed photographs of shuttle crews lining the walls.

It is also rumored that Julia Roberts dined there while filming ‘Erin Brockovich,’ which was filmed in Boron.

Exit off CA 58 on Boron Ave., go south for about 1/2 mile to stop sign and turn left to 27075 Twenty Mule Team Rd, Boron, CA 93516, (760) 762-6266.
