California cruising past Mt. Shasta, boondocking at Corps of Engineers campground on Black Butte Lake

MtShasta_haze_JulianneGCraneWe are slowly making our way down the center of Oregon and California along I-5 on this year’s Snowbird trip to the Gulf Coast of Texas. We encountered a hazy Mt. Shasta within a short time of cresting the Siskiyou Summit.

COEBlackButte_sunrise_JulianneGCraneOur first evening out we dry camped at the Corps of Engineers Buckhorn Campground on Black Butte Lake, west of Orland (I-5, Exit 621).

We stopped over at this campground in 2011 and remembered it is open all year. During winter months there are 22 available sites (some pull-thru). First-come, no reservations. No utilities at sites; however, we took advantage of the hot, clean showers and flush toilets.
