Rock climbers using minimal RV

AdamLeavyAliciaMetzZion(JulianneCrane)Rock climbers Adam Leavy and Alician Metz spent a few days climbing in Zion National Park and dry camping in the South Campground.

The Prescott, Ariz., pair were using Adam’s 2000 Toyota Tacoma 4WD truck and converted canopy. He’s taken his Custom Road Cab and creatively fashioned a sleeping area and variety of storage spaces for his vast array of camping and rock climbing gear.

On top of his canopy, Adam has added two solar panels for additional power and two 10-gallon, 4-inch x 6-feet pipes for water storage (one used as a solar shower, the other for fresh water).

Alicia, on spring break from Prescott College, is fairly new at rock climbing. Adams, on the other hand, has been climbing for several years. “In fact,” he says, “I moved to Prescott because of the outstanding climbing in that area.”

For the past nine years, between April and September, Adam has worked in California for the Sequoia-Kings Canyon National Park on the trail maintenance crew.

“Four of us go out in the back country with nine mules and five horses,” says Adam. “We carry shovels, chain saws and blasting equipment. I love the work.”
