Our old truck camping buddy, Butch Michaelsen visits from eastern Oregon with new sidekick Oakley

ButchMichaelsen_JulianneGCraneRVer Butch Michaelsen made the 600-plus mile journey from Halfway, in eastern Oregon, taking mostly back roads.

Given a choice, Butch will always choose the meandering, scenic way. After years as a longhaul trucker, these days his philosophy is: “Why get some place faster, when later will do just fine and you’ll arrive relaxed.” Butch travels in his 2005 Dodge Ram 2500 4WD flatbed truck and custom-made 2014 pop-top Alaskan camper.

Oakley-JulianneGCraneOn this trip to visit with Jimmy and me, Butch brought with him his new best friend: ‘Oakley’ a four-month old half-Catahoula and half-Border Collie. This energetic, loving creature lives to work, run and play.

She fits in perfect because Butch has been the caretaker for a decade  on a nice-sized piece of property that sits at 3200 feet in the shadow of Cornucopia Peak between Oregon’s Eagle Cap Wilderness and Idaho’s Hell’s Canyon at the south end of the Wallowa Mountains.
