“Hidden beneath the rolling prairie of the southern Black Hills is one of the world’s longest caves …. ” and the Wind Cave National Park in South Dakota is an amazing summer RV discovery destination for the family.
Because the summers are hot in this part of the world, consider going as early, or late, in the season as you can comfortably arrange.
The park’s Elk Mountain Campground is a first-come, first-served no-frills facility that offers families a unique opportunity “to experience the prairie/forest edges and view the plants and animals of the southern Black Hills.”
The campground fee is $18 a night per site when water and toilet facilities are available during warmer months. (In late fall through early spring when the water is turned off, the fee is $9 a night per site). Visitors holding a Senior or Access Pass, or a Golden Age or Golden Access Pass pay half price a night per site.
There are 25 pull-through sites in the campground. On one loop there are no length limits for RVs. This is a dry camping site are no hookups, showers, or dump stations in the campground. According to park sources, the campground is fairly quiet compared to other campgrounds in the Black Hills and finding a campsite is usually not a problem.
