Palisades State Park, ideal stop between Salt Lake City and Zion or Bryce Canyon

Share

Palisades State Park, Manti, Utah, off Hwy 89, is a couple of hours south of the Salt Lake City-Provo area and a great place to stop if you’re on your way to Bryce Canyon or Zion National Parks.

It sits on the Palisade Reservoir where people can rent paddle boats or fish from the shore.  This park offers something for all family members, from swimming, electric motor and non-motorized boating, a desert canyon 18-hole golf course, RV and tent camping, and to access for off-highway vehicle riding in nearby Six-Mile Canyon.

History of park: “In the 1860s, Daniel B. Funk, an early settler of the surrounding Sanpete Valley, had the idea of a summer and weekend resort area. At that time, the valley was owned by a small group of Sanpitch Indians led by Chief Arapeen. Daniel B. Funk bargained with the chief and obtained a land patent from the government. He and his family then set about the arduous task of building a dam and diverting part of Six-Mile Creek to fill the lake. The lake quickly became a well-known pleasure resort, now called Palisade.”

Opened to the public as a state park in 1962. Elevation – 5,800 feet. We paid $25/night for full hookups. There are double sites. This is a very popular park for families. Suggest making reservations during summer months.
