By Julianne CraneTaking advantage of decent driving conditions on Saturday through Southern California’s high desert and the Grapevine, we cut west from Frazier Park (off I-5) on a gray line road that skirts the Chumash Wilderness in Los Padres National Forest … what an incredible landscape.

Our aim was to reach the Pacific Coast and camp at Morro Bay State Park, north of San Luis Obispo.

By Julianne Crane We arrived at the park in time to find a dry camping site ($35; hookups/$50) and walked about 1/4 mile to a cliff overlooking the beach–just as the sun was setting on Morro Bay and the Pacific Ocean.

It was a glorious few moments.
