Fiat Ducato best ‘base vehicle’ in UK

The Fiat Ducato has just awarded the “Which Motorcaravan (Magazine’s) Base Vehicle” for the third year running in United Kingdom.

According to Gizmag.com, “two out of every three motorhomes in Europe are built on the Fiat Ducato base and there are more than 400,000 Fiat Ducato motorhomes on the road in Europe alone.”

Fiat introduced a new natural gas model, the  Ducato 140 Natural Power, in March 2009. The five gas tanks are installed under the flooring and this leaves the entire storage area free.

“The vehicle is configured to default to natural gas. Petrol supply is provided automatically only when the natural gas is about to run out: the petrol tank holds 15 litres in recovery mode to assure 100 km driving distance to reach the nearest natural gas station,” according to an item on AutoChannel.com.

It does seem interesting that the US is always behind on implementing fuel saving Technologies. While a switch to natural gas isn’t going to automatically mean better fuel economy, it is cleaner, cheaper and the engines require less maintenance.

I’d be nice to see a few more of those options around here.
