Bucket List RV trip: ‘Scotland by campervan’

oban-caravan-camping-parkThis is one of my personal “Bucket List RV trips.”

I chose to begin my RV “Bucket List” with Scotland because the MacDonald side of my family tree emigrated from Scotland to Nova Scotia, Canada, in the last half of the 19th century, and then to the United States in the late 1920s.

I’ve toured the land of my ancestors twice–the first time by train, and the second by car–my next visit will be by campervan.

To begin my research online I clicked on Visit Scotland for ideas and advice. I soon discovered that 2014 is Scotland’s “Year of Homecoming” with numerous activities for the “year-long celebration of all that makes Scotland great and an amazing place to visit.”

For details on accommodations and camping destinations, including Oban Caravan and Camping Park (above), click on “Motorhome and campervan breaks in Scotland.”

LochranzaRedDeer_KathrynMawsonNext, I researched a number of additional camping and caravanning resources including: Scottish Camping, a directory of all the campsites / caravan parks in Scotland. One of the favorite destinations listed is Lochranza Caravan and Camping Site (left), “a small, friendly and quiet campsite snuggled amid mountain and loch scenery. It sits at the north-west end of the Isle of Arran, near the Arran Distillery.”

As for RV rentals online sites, for a nostalgic “lovingly-refurbished vintage VW campervan” click on  Scooby Campers and be dreaming about experiencing “the joys of Scotland, in your own time and at your own speed.” True “you won’t break the lands-speed records.”

ScoobyVWcamperIt states that the 4-berth campervan can sleep 4 (very friendly) persons (ideally  2 adults and 2 children.) “It has a ‘rock’n roll bed’ for the adults and 2 additional bunks in the pop up roof section. The campervan also includes a small fridge, 2 ring gas cooker and sink so no excuses for the breakfast.” And, there is an electric hook up facility, according to the Scooby Campers website.
