The last time Jimmy and I camped at Balmorhea State Park it was in December and there was 4-inches of snow on the ground.  We were waiting out a winter storm in New Mexico and southwest Texas.

This visit, 15 months later, temperatures are in the high 80s and we are ready to cool off in the 77,053 square-foot San Solomon Spring-fed swimming pool that was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in the early 1930s.

“The pool differs from most public pools in several respects: the 1-3/4-acre size, the 25-foot depth and the 72 to 76 degree constant temperature. It also has a variety of aquatic life in its clear waters,” reports the Texas Parks department.

The park sits on the edge of the Davis Mountains (elevation is 3,205′) south of I-10 on Texas 17. The campground features 34 campsites with electricity and water ($14); some include cable hookup for $17. There is a daily entrance fee of $7.
