If you are traveling along Pacific Coast Highway 101 in Northern California or are looking for a spot to escape the hot summer weather and smoke from the wildfires in southern Oregon and northern California, head for Crescent City where the average high and low temperatures in August are 66 °F (19 °C) and 51 °F (11 °C).

Jimmy  and I rendezvoused with longtime-RV friends Jane and Kevin Justis of Susanville, Calif., in a hidden gem of a public campground. Florence Keller County Park and Campground is located three miles north of Crescent City, just off Hwy. 101.

FlorenceKellerPark_JulianneGCraneFlorence Keller Campground has 50 tent/RV sites located in second growth redwoods. It is said that recreation vehicles up to 32-feet  can be accommodated.  However, there are very few of those sites are available.  We just barely tucked into our site (on pavement) with our Ford pickup and Northern Lite camper (total 23-feet).

All sites on a first come, first serve basis. Dry camp sites are $15 per night. There is one hook-up site for $20. Extra vehicles are $5 per site. Flush toilets in restrooms. Water is available. No showers.

It is a perfect family campground with an adjacent park area that contains horseshoe pits, volleyball court, tether ball and swings. There are seven easy walking trails, one of which is wheelchair accessible. It is beautiful and affordable.
