RVers Ted and Bridgitte Johnson of Tionesta, Pa., are avid bicyclists who have been two-wheeling their way around western Pennsylvania for years. To make it a little more comfortable for trips more than an hour from home, they take along their Coleman tent trailer for over-night stays.

We meet Bridgitte and Ted in October 2010.  They were bicycling near our campsite at the Outflow Recreation Area Campground (PDF 123KB) in the US Army Corps of Engineers’ Tionesta Recreation Area.

We talked for some time about nearby recreation trails. They were particularly enthusiastic about the Allegheny River Trail and the Oil Creek Park Bicycle Trail. “However,” said Bridgitte, “there are dozens of great trails in western Pennsylvania.”

For more information and maps on these trails, click on Allegheny Valley Trails Association. There is also valuable information through the national Rails to Trails organization.
