In terms of daylight, the winter solstice marks the shortest day and longest night of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. In 2019, it “occurs on Saturday, December 21, at 11:19 p.m. EST,” according to the Farmers Almanac.
At the exact moment of this year, we’ll be sleeping. However when we wake, the sun will be slowly drifting north into the Tropic of Capricorn.
Somewhere I read that if you step outside at noon on the day of the winter solstice, you will cast your longest shadow of the year.
