RVing with Kids, part 1: Quality time with family

CarleyAlexanderFaimily_whereRVGoingEach year more than 22 million RV owners vacation in America’s great outdoors in order to spend “quality time” with their families.

“Using an RV gives families the flexibility to vacation how they want and when they want, at a budget-friendly price,” according to the Recreation Vehicle Industry Association.

“We love the outdoors,” says Carley Alexander, a stay-at-home mom of three boys (12, 9, 7) and blogger of WhereRVGoing, com.

Originally from Texas, Carley and her husband, David Alexander, moved to Seattle in 2004 for David’s technology job. “Exploring the great Pacific Northwest quickly became our passion,” she says.

Beginning as tent campers, in 2011 the Alexanders became avid RVers. In 2014 they purchased a new 34-foot Open Range Light 305BHS travel trailer that they pull with a 2012 Ford F150 equipped with max towing and EcoBoost engine.

“We chose to go with the Open Range Light trailer due to its weight, options and the great bunk room for the kids,” says Alexander. “Plus we liked the full size slide out closet in the master bedroom for those long trips. This trailer is very spacious.”

During the summer, or just about any time the boys are off from school, the family hooks up their travel trailer and heads out to “any place we can hike or explore all day.”

One favorite family vacation was a three-week circle trip of the American West in 2013.  A few of the places they visited were Sequoia National Park, Big Sur, Disneyland, Grand Canyon National Park, and Arches National Park. ”We made awesome memories that the kids still talk about,” says Alexander.

In part 2 of this 4-part series we’ll talk of how RV camping helps families connect with nature, each other.
