RVing artists, part 2 – painter Skye Sutherland

Share
This is the second of four installments on “RVing Artists.”

More than a dozen years after the Terry and Ruth Hager became full-time RVers in the mid-1990s, fine artist Skye Sutherland made a giant mid-career shift.

Sutherland had been living in the New York City area for years. Then, she said, after “watching the World Trade Center towers being destroyed in front of my eyes,” she moved back to New England.

In 2002 she purchased an apartment/office building in Connecticut and “did not enjoy being a landlord one bit,” she said. “But, that was the time when owning real estate was all the rage.”

Sutherland recalled that her mother kept saying: “Why don’t you sell the building, go live in a motor home and travel the country painting portraits of dogs at campgrounds?”

“She put the bug in my ear and it stayed there for years,” said the acrylic and pastel painter. In 2010 the 40-something “bit the bullet,” sold her real estate and bought a 21-foot travel trailer.

She now lives full time in a 2008 Flagstaff Micro Lite with, Zackary, her 85-pound Doberman-Shepard mix rescue dog. Her dinette table doubles as her studio.

“Getting in my Durango and pulling my rig down the highway, with my paint brushes and guitar in the seat next to me, my dog sleeping in the back, and a good Keith Urban song playing on the radio,” she said, “is always an amazing experience.”

  • I am a newbie to full time RV living with my “new” 1994 NuWa HITCHHIKER II. I’m an Artist & I work in pastels, Colored pencils, Graphite pencils, Watercolor, and soft stone sculpture. I am trying to figure out how to get ALL my Studio stuff (including my canopy and display walls,et al) into my rig – pulled by a 1989 Ford F150 Extended cab 4×4 W/ 5th wheel hitch. Thanks!
