A rich historic and outdoor RV camping destination in the Pacific Northwest centers around the hamlet of Frenchglen in the southeast corner of Oregon at the base of the Steens Mountain.

Whether tent or RV camping, headquarter out of the Bureau of Land Management’s Page Springs Campground. It is a steal at $8/per vehicle per night (or $4 with American the Beautiful Senior Pass).  There are several nature walks and more strenuous hikes with trailheads in or near the campground.

Because of the Steens Mountain and nearby Malheur Wildlife Refuge, the area is renowned for its wildlife and birding. More than “320 species of birds and 58 mammal species have been observed on the Refuge. Malheur’s location on the Pacific Flyway and it’s abundant water and food resources provide a wayside for many resident and migratory birds.”

FrenchglenHotelOre(JulianneCrane)The Frenchglen Hotel State Heritage Site offers eight rooms for rent and down home dining.

For a break from campfire cooking, the hotel features breakfast, lunch and dinner service. For the midday meal, the burgers and fresh made soup (and cornbread) come highly recommended.

For a bit more about the Frenchglen Hotel read an item I recently posted on RV Short Stops by clicking here.
