From group campouts in Georgia, to wearing shorts and sandals in the southwest desert, to traditional turkey dinners on the Baja in Mexico, people who use their recreation vehicles (RVs) during the holidays often create lasting memories.
While they may not add up to a lot of gifts or a huge Christmas tree, these unique experiences hold great value for RVing families.
Since becoming full-time RVers more than a dozen years ago, Betty and Lance Wilson have traveled more than 250,000 miles in their 2000 32-foot Gulfstream Yellowstone fifth wheel trailer.
Over their years RVing, the Wilsons have learned to make friends quickly and be flexible during holiday celebrations. Their second on-the-road Thanksgiving coincided with a large gathering of friends in Puerto Pesasco, Mexico, about 60 miles south of Lukeville, Ariz.
Food in that coastal town was usually all about seafood. However, on this particular holiday, the Wilsons suggested having a traditional American Thanksgiving dinner “complete with real pumpkin pie and stuffing cooked in the turkey.” They roasted a 22-pound bird in their fifth wheel’s “large” oven and everyone else agreed to contribute all the trimmings.
“We planned to eat outdoors but a sandy windstorm forced us inside,” recalled Betty Wilson. “By then the group was 12 rigs strong, and having the largest unit, we hosted the dinner. Somehow, all 20-plus people found a place in our rig for themselves and their dishes—intimate, to say the least. But, what a memory.”
Over the 2014 Thanksgiving eight of the “Mexico camping group” were reunited at Borrego Springs, Calif., to recreate that favorite RV holiday memory.
“We stayed at Borrego Palm Canyon Campground in the Anza Borrego Desert State Park,” wrote Betty in an email. “Almost like being on the beach at the Sea of Cortez. The weather was great and we had a lot of room outside to spread out for our Thanksgiving meal.”
