Books for cooking on the go: ‘Manifold Destiny’ and ‘Diesel Dining’

If you are looking for a holiday gift for an RVer (or long-distance trucker) consider one of these on-the-go cookbooks.

Nearly 20 years ago, Chris Maynard and Bill Scheller opened the world’s eyes to the beauty of car-engine gastronomy in the original “Manifold Destiny” (2008, 160 pages, $14).

Of course two decades ago, car engines ran a little hotter than today, so the authors have gone back and updated the recipes.

RVBookstore.com writes: “With step-by-step diagrams, crowd-pleasing recipes, and thorough instructions, you can turn your car or RV into a kitchen and forget about visiting a Denny’s or even cooking in an old-fashioned RV kitchen.”

Diesel Dining: The Art of Manifold Cooking” by Cecil Jorgensen and Kathleen Szalay (Publication Consultants, 2010, 128 pages, $14.95) teaches you how to prepare good, healthy, hot, affordable meals.

“Diesel Dining: The Art of Manifold Cooking is for hungry truck drivers. Hard working people not having the luxury of being at home, and wanting something at the end of a long day resembling a home-cooked dinner,” according to the book description on Amazon.com

Its premise is based on using a truck’s diesel engine to cook meals.  With a little ingenuity, maybe these instructions could be adapted to an RV’s diesel engine.
