Boondocking at Silver Creek Marsh Campground in the Fremont National Forest in So. Oregon

Share

SilverMarshCampground-OregonJimmy and I boondocked last night at the Silver Creek Marsh Campground about 11 mile southwest of Silver Lake, Ore, on FS 27 off Hwy 31.

We were the only RV campers there, boondocking (found this jewel in Don Wright’s “Free Campgounds”).

The level camping sites are generously spaced. There is a very clean pit toilet, picnic tables, level sites and campfire pits. No drinking water when we were there.

We hiked a short part of the Fremont National Recreation Trail and bushwhacked across a mountain meadow with towering Ponderosa Pines and the meandering Silver Creek.

There are also horse corrals and 5 hitching rails available at the campground. Trails are open to hikers, horseback riders, and mountain bike riders.

Map of region

The “Fremont-Winema National Forests offer 2.3 million acres to explore. The heavily timbered western portion of the forests is bordered by the crest of the Cascade Mountain Range and Crater Lake National Park, and stretches east into the Klamath River Basin, an area known for its year-round sunshine. Near the floor of the Basin, the forest opens to vast marshes and meadows associated with Upper Klamath Lake and the Williamson River. To the north and east extensive stands of ponderosa and lodgepole pine grow on deep pumice and ash that blanketed the area during the eruption of Mt. Mazama (now Crater Lake) nearly 7,000 years ago. The eastern portion of the Forests offers expansive views, dramatic cliffs, and solitude. The area is known as Oregon’s Outback, and provides the self-reliant recreationist the opportunity to discover nature in a rustic environment. The Fremont-Winema National Forests include seven Ranger Districts, with the headquarters located in Lakeview, Oregon.” From the Fremont-Winema National Forests Web site.
