Carlsbad Caverns’ 2012 Star Parties

This summer Carlsbad Caverns National Park has planned several free Star Party events.

“The park is a perfect spot for viewing the wonders of the night sky due to its location miles away from the lights of the local communities.”

Because the rangers are asking that people arrive before dark (because bright headlights impair night vision), why not get there earlier in the day and take a tour of this fantastic, cool [56°F (13°C) average temperature] natural wonder.

Summer extended hours: May 25 – Sept. 3, 2012

Last Cavern Entry:
- Via Natural Entrance: 3:30 p.m.
- Via elevator: 4 p.m.
Visitor Center Open: 8 a.m. – 7 p.m.

2012 Star Party dates:
July 14, Aug, 18 (Perseid Meteor Shower), Sept. 15, Oct. 13

Nearby New Mexico State Park Campground

If you plan to be RVing or tent camping while in that area of southern New Mexico, one campground you might consider is  Brantley Lake State Park. It is located 12 miles north of Carlsbad, NM, on U.S. 285, then 4.5 miles northeast on Eddy County Road 30.

While we were camped there in our recreation vehicle a couple years back, we met two memorable solo travelers, each going their own way, each with a unique story.
