We spent a beautiful day touring Tybee Island, Georgia — perfect for people and bird watching.
Tybee means “salt” to Native Americans, but the Chamber of Commerce boasts the name of this low-key seaside resort now brings to mind words such as “sun”, “surf” and “fun”.
Located 18 miles east of Savannah, this small barrier island features a wide, 3-mile long beach that’s backed by sea oat-covered sand dunes on the Atlantic Ocean.
The place is packed with history: Fort Screven, The Tybee Island Lighthouse (dated 1773) and Fort Pulaski National Monument. I climbed the 178 stairs to the top of the light house. Incredible view of the land surrounding where the Atlantic Ocean and Savannah River meet.
