Public lands provide families with low-cost fun and opportunities for lessons in ‘stewardship’

Yosemite_ElCapitan_JulianneGCraneJimmy and I are huge fans of America’s Public Lands and are avid supporters of National Public Lands Day on Sept. 24, 2016.

Whenever we have the opportunity to visit any public lands facility — whether canoeing a community reservoir, camping on BLM land, or hiking an awe-inspiring National Park trail — one simple activity we do is take along a sturdy trash bag and make sure we leave it cleaner than we found it.

John Muir (1838 – 1914) naturalist, author, environmental philosopher and early advocate of the preservation of wilderness, wrote:

Everyone needs beauty as well as bread. Places to pray in and play in. Where nature may heal and give strength to the body and soul alike. This natural beauty hunger is made manifest in our magnificent National Parks. Nature’s sublime wonderlands. The admiration and joy of the world.”

While the kids may be back in school, there are still many weekends before the snow flies. Get outside and make memories.
