Still room on the Alaska auto ferry

Another indicator that RVers are returning to Alaska this summer are the advanced bookings on the Alaska Marine Highway System.

While “tourism officials expect a 25 percent decline in (total) bookings for the 2009 visitor season … officials with the Alaska Marine Highway System say they are noticing steady bookings with increased activity in recent weeks,” writes Margaret Bauman in the Alaska Journal of Commerce.

The primary out-of-state ferry travelers are “affluent couples aged 45 to 65 years old who are interested in independent travel to and within Alaska, especially via car or recreational vehicle, and interested in relaxed, slower-paced travel.”

The secondary target market “is adventure travelers, the younger, outdoor-oriented types, and affinity groups, such as birders and motorcycle riders.”

So, if you are RVers towing a Gold Wing …you might want to read “Bookings slow but steady on Alaska Marine Highway System.”
