RV Short Stop: Visit Plains, Georgia, and hear Pres. Jimmy Carter at his Sunday Bible class

I first visited Plains in the summer of 1991 when I started volunteering for Habitat for Humanity in Americus, Ga., about 10 miles north of Plains.

It was then that I learned that former Pres. Jimmy Carter would frequently give “Sunday school classes” at the Maranatha Baptist Church. (He still does today.)

On my Sunday visits to Plains, after listening to President Carter lace his Sunday lessons with wisdom along with current and historic references, I would often walk the main street talking with local folks and stopping in at places of interest. Back in 2010, when Jimmy and I were passing through southwest Georgia to visit friends and do a little work with Habitat, we timed it so that we could hear President Carter speak.

Later, Jimmy Smith wrote eloquently about his thoughts after hearing President Carter.

“I found myself wiping my eyes from time to time as this old man wove lessons from biblical times with lessons of today and proposed radical ideas such as thinking for ourselves and holding our government accountable and where possible, choosing the path of peace,” recalled Jimmy Smith.
