Born in Maine, Kate Bright currently travels around the country camping on remote public lands in the 20-foot 2012 Ford e250 cargo van she recently converted into traveling recreation vehicle.
The retired teacher, mother and grandmother said she took on the conversion because she is “a frustrated architect wannabee who likes a challenge.”
“I love to play around with wood and build stuff,” she said. “My expertise is creating piles of sawdust, but once in a while I get something right.”
When not traveling, Kate, a full-time RVer, lives in her 5th wheel trailer at the Escapees’ Park of the Sierra in Coarsegold, Calif., where she volunteers on the maintenance crew.
“I starting working on the propane crew,” recalled Kate. “At that time it seemed they had more workers than they needed, so I switched to maintenance. My favorite jobs are chipping, cutting, wall-building and sign making.
“I kinda had to claw my way into the maintenance crew’s man-cave,” joked Kate, “but now I feel at home and welcome there. I guess I’m just too stubborn to be ignored.”
