We camped last night at South Llano River (Texas) State Park, on the edge of Hill Country, about 150 miles west of Austin and 5 miles south of I-10 and Junction, TX).
This is the third winter we’ve spent time in Texas, and each year we have made this a destination campground. We are grateful for the generous camp sites because this year we are towing our 29-foot Citation 5th wheel. (In previous years we traveled in a truck/camper.)
Hot showers and flush toilets are open round-the-clock. Water and electricity are available at each site. One downside is that Verizon cell connection is terrible. No, make that non-existent.
After leaving South Llano, we encountered white-knuckle high winds as we headed west along I-10 (gusting to more than 40 mph) all the way (260 miles) to Balmorhea State Park in the west Texas panhandle.
Our fuel mileage dropped like a rock from about 11-12 mpg (2001 F350 Ford towing a 29-foot Citation 5th wheel trailer) to 7.2 mpg. Winds are predicted to ease.
