Texas’ South Llano River State Park a keeper

SoLlanoRSP_spillway_JulianneGCraneI was prepared not to be impressed with South Llano River (Texas) State Park (about 150 miles west of Austin and 5 miles south of I-10 and Junction) … much of the park is closed this time of year to public access because of the annual Turkey Roost … cutting off the majority of the hiking trails and access to the river …  (Update 2013: Roost area is open between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.). There are a number of wildlife viewing blinds and the wild turkeys roam everywhere.

This is a delightful, keenly taken care of public campground that is the favorite of many Texans and out of state visitors. Did I mention that visitors can fish within the park limits without a state license.

The sites are generous with covered picnic tables, flat paved pads and campfire circles.   Hot showers and flush toilets are open round-the-clock. Water and electricity are available on each RV site. Verizon cell connection, however, is spotty at best.
