Planning first leg of USA RV, camping trip

Share

Beginning the last week of September 2010, Jimmy Smith and I are leaving on our second long RV odyssey.

Once again we are taking off in Jimmy’s 1996 Lance Squire Lite 165 8.6′ camper and 2003 Chevy Silverado 3/4 ton. We choose to travel light so that we can camp in more primitive, dispersed sites on public lands.

Last winter we traveled three months and more than 8,000 miles crisscrossing the West, going as far east as Austin and south to Big Bend National Park in Texas.

During this year’s autumn-winter exploration we plan to be out for up to six months, circumnavigating most of the continental U.S.A.

We’ll be making most of this up as we go, however, the first leg has us following U. S. Route 2 north from Spokane, Wash., to Bonner’s Ferry, Idaho; then east to Kalispell and Glacier National Park in Montana. After that we will hug the Canadian border through North Dakota to Greenbush, Minnesota, to visit friends.

Suggestions of quiet, spectacular places to camp/boondock along U. S. Route 2 are encouraged.

  • Newbie here. I am looking for something to pull behind my Acura MDX and figured I could not camp in below freezing weather. Do you ever have issue keeping warm and pipes clear?
