On the drive to The Rally in Redmond, Ore., last week, we stopped off for a picnic lunch at the Crow Butte Park about 55 miles southwest of the Tri-Cities, on Washington State Route 14.

Crow Butte Campground is situated in the majestic Columbia River. The 275 acre park is on the island and accessible by wheeled and river traffic.

CrowButteSPSign(JulianneCrane)The park is owned by the US Army Corps of Engineers and operated by the Port of Benton (County). It is situated on a 1500 acre island surrounded by waters backed up by the John Day dam. The park offers boating, water skiing, fishing, wind surfing, hiking and wildlife viewing.

While we were only there for a pleasant lunch in the day use area, Crow Butte Park is a destination campground offering many days of outdoor activities.CrowButteCampsite(JulianneCrane)

“Hiking trails lead to the top pf the island’s butte affording views of Mount Hood, Mount Adams and the lower Columbia River region. Deer, coyotes, rabbits and other wildlife are easily seen roaming the island at dusk and dawn.”

There are 50 full service camping spots for $25/night, three boat launches and a boat basin. A group area can hold up to 80 people. Both day use ($5) and campground areas offer flush toilets and (pay) hot showers.

Open March 15 to Oct. 15. Reservations are accepted and recommended (on the day we were there, the campground was full) — click here. Or for information email: Dave Bender at res@portofbenton.com or call 509-875-2644.

  • The campground was completely booked on the weekend we stopped by. Seems there was some kind of wine tasting-touring event at the local vineyards expanding along the Columbia River. Talked with a couple that came over from Portland in the truck and camper. Sounded like a fun event.

  • Oh my gosh! incredibly breathtaking. I can smell the fresh air vicariously.

Thanks for the pictures. How many other folks were there enjoying the Park?
