Alaska: Ultimate RV Road Trip, part 1 — Lure of the midnight sun

+Alaska_JohnHolodWith fuel prices expected to remain “below $3 per gallon throughout 2015,” according to a recent AAA report — this is the ideal year to plan that ultimate road trip to Alaska. One of the grandest recreation vehicle adventures of a lifetime is following the lure of the Alaska Highway north to the land of the midnight sun.

“An RV is a perfect way to enjoy the scenic highways and Alaska,” says travel photographer John Holod of RV Adventure Videos who has traveled to the Last Frontier since the early 1970s. “You can stop where you want, eat what you want, and sleep when you want.”

Along the way there will be opportunities to photograph grizzly bear fishing for sockeye salmon, kayak at the foot of ancient glaciers, and drift back in time to the days of prospectors panning for gold. There is so much to see and do in Alaska, the big question is “time.”

“Alaska is a long way from anywhere,” says Holod. “From the Midwest you should plan on logging about 12,000 miles round trip.”  He suggests taking a minimum of six weeks for the trip, and that three months is better. “If you have less time, do yourself a favor and fly to Anchorage and rent an RV.”

    • “Alaska: Ultimate RV Road Trip, part 2 — Stay flexible and take your time” is due on Sunday, May 17; “Part 3 — The Milepost, bible of North Country travel” is scheduled for Tuesday, May 19; and “Part 4 — Planning Tips” will be up May 21.

  • Do you need a passport to drive the Al-Can? At what point do you need it? Is their a tool? Is their a web site for border crossing into Canada? I would like to find some one to caravan with but be realllly flexible can you recommend how?

    • Glo:
Regarding the Passport: If you are driving to Alaska through Canada, you are required to bring your passport or an equivalent travel document. “Although you will not be asked to present your passport or documentation to Canadian officials when entering Canada, you will be asked to show it to U.S. officials when re-entering the U.S. Travel documents acceptable for re-entry into the U.S. include an enhanced driver’s license (EDL), a passport card and a NEXUS, SENTRI or FAST card,” according to a USA Today article. For more information on the process, go to the U.S. Passports & International Travel website — (travel.state.gov/content/passports/english/passports.html)
As for finding someone with whom to caravan, a couple of places to start would be the Wandering Individuals Network (rvsingles.org); Loners on Wheels (lonersonwheels.com); and RVing Women (rvingwomen.org).
      Good luck and fun travels,
      Julianne
