RVer Jimmy Smith remembers a stormy December night 35 years ago on a small Maine island

Share

EagleIsland_Vladi-2It was 1979 when the 118-pound Jimmy Smith spent the summer bicycling from Lincoln City on the Oregon Coast to Camden, Maine, on the Atlantic Ocean.

At the end of that three-month meandering 3,500-mile journey, 30-year-old Jimmy stumbled into a winter caretaker position on Eagle Island, 17 miles off Camden, in Penobscot Bay.

In Jimmy’s latest post, he reflects on the primitive life on the island and his friendship with the only other winter resident, the fiercely independent 85-year-old Marion Howard.

  • Jimmy:
Thank you for a beautiful Christmas memory and a tiny glimpse of one of life’s small miracles. You were there just when and where you were supposed to be and have become who you are through, I am sure, many such serendipitous moments that make up a life.

Wishing you and Julianne a very Merry Christmas and a happy New Year! So glad that you are writing as I consider it a gift to me and many others who are fortunate enough to have found your site.

    Best Regards,
    Carol Storts
